On Monday, March 16, Apple unveiled the AirPods Max 2, marking the inaugural update to its premium over-ear headphone lineup since its December 2020 debut.
Powering the latest iteration is Apple’s H2 chip, the same silicon currently utilized in both AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 models. This hardware upgrade introduces numerous capabilities to the Max series that were absent from the original release.
According to Apple, the refreshed headphones provide Active Noise Cancellation performance that reaches up to 1.5 times greater effectiveness compared to the first-generation model. This enhancement stems from the H2 chip combined with advanced computational audio processing.
The enhanced ANC specifically addresses common environmental noise such as aircraft engines and public transportation sounds. Meanwhile, Transparency mode receives refinements for more authentic audio pass-through.
Regarding sound performance, Apple integrated a newly designed high dynamic range amplifier. The tech giant claims this enhancement delivers improved audio clarity while maintaining the fundamental sonic characteristics of the original AirPods Max.
Marking a first for the AirPods Max line, the updated model enables 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio playback. Users can access this premium audio quality through the bundled USB-C cable.
Fresh Capabilities Debut on AirPods Max
Adaptive Audio technology, Conversation Awareness functionality, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation all make their AirPods Max debut. These capabilities previously launched with the second-generation AirPods Pro.
Live Translation, enabled by Apple Intelligence technology, facilitates real-time multilingual communication. Voice Isolation leverages the H2 chip’s computational audio processing to eliminate background noise during phone calls.
Conversation Awareness intelligently reduces media playback volume when the user begins speaking with someone in their vicinity. Adaptive Audio dynamically modifies ANC and Transparency settings according to environmental conditions.
Content creators receive two dedicated features. Studio-quality audio recording caters to podcasters, journalists, and musicians requiring professional sound capture. The Camera remote function enables users to control iPhone or iPad photography and videography via the Digital Crown.
The updated AirPods Max also introduce gaming enhancements. When paired with Game Mode across iOS, macOS, or iPadOS devices, users experience diminished audio latency for improved gameplay.
Cost, Color Options, and Launch Details
The AirPods Max 2 retail for $549 in the United States. This matches the original model’s launch price, representing no change in the base cost between generations.
Five color variants are available: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
Pre-ordering begins March 25 through Apple’s online store and the Apple Store mobile application. Physical retail availability and customer deliveries commence in early April.
Apple emphasized sustainability enhancements in the new model. The AirPods Max 2 incorporate 100% recycled rare earth elements across all magnetic components and 100% recycled polyester fabric in the ear cushion materials.
Customers purchasing AirPods Max 2 who are new to Apple Music receive a complimentary three-month subscription.
