On Wednesday, BMW took the wraps off its all-new electric i3 sedan, representing the second vehicle built upon the company’s revolutionary Neue Klasse architecture.

This introduction represents a clear challenge to Tesla’s Model 3 range, and the Bavarian manufacturer makes no attempt to hide its intentions.
The i3 arrives exclusively as the 50 xDrive configuration — featuring twin electric motors driving all four wheels and generating 469 horsepower. While Tesla’s Model 3 Performance variant delivers 510 horsepower, BMW compensates with a significant advantage elsewhere.
The automaker projects 900 kilometers of driving distance under Europe’s WLTP testing protocol, which converts to approximately 440 miles using EPA measurements. This would substantially exceed the Tesla Model 3 Performance’s 309 EPA-rated miles, and even surpass the Model 3 Premium’s 363-mile capability.
Rapid charging capability allows the i3 to recover roughly 250 miles of range within a mere 10-minute charging session, enabled by 800-volt electrical architecture and sixth-generation eDrive powertrain technology. Acceleration from standstill to 60 mph is projected at approximately four seconds.
Cabin Features and Digital Systems
BMW has completely reimagined the interior space around a massive 40-inch panoramic screen spanning the dashboard width. The refreshed iDrive interface operates on BMW’s latest Heart of Joy computing architecture, delivering processing speeds 10 times faster than previous iterations.
Physically, the new i3 exceeds the current 3 Series dimensions — measuring longer, wider, and taller — while its styling language offers a preview of the upcoming gasoline-powered 3 Series design direction.
Official American pricing remains unannounced, though BMW is anticipated to position the i3 near $55,000. This places it above the Model 3 Premium AWD’s approximate $47,490 entry point, but matches the Model 3 Performance’s $54,990 price tag.
Manufacturing Schedule and American Availability
Manufacturing will commence at BMW’s Munich production facility in August 2026. European customers can expect deliveries beginning autumn 2026, however American consumers face a longer wait — stateside deliveries aren’t anticipated until sometime in 2027.
BMW has announced that additional configurations will arrive later, including a fully electric M3 performance variant. Both the i3 sedan and iX3 SUV form part of an extensive Neue Klasse expansion that encompasses four additional forthcoming models.
The company characterizes the Neue Klasse initiative as the most substantial financial commitment in its corporate history.
Wall Street analysts maintain a Hold rating consensus on BAMXF stock, with five Buy recommendations, five Hold ratings, and three Sell calls issued over the previous three months. The consensus price target stands at $104.23, suggesting potential upside of roughly 14.3% from present trading levels.
BMW.DE declined 0.20% during Wednesday’s session, while Tesla (TSLA) dropped 0.38%.
