Rivian disclosed complete pricing and specifications for its R2 SUV Thursday at Austin’s SXSW festival — yet investors weren’t impressed.
Shares of Rivian (RIVN) slipped approximately 2.4% to $16.22 during early market hours, despite the highly anticipated announcement providing clarity on the automaker’s upcoming model.
The R2 portfolio includes three trim levels. The Performance configuration, first to market, carries a $57,990 starting price with the launch package, excluding a $1,495 destination charge. A Premium variant priced at $53,990 launches in late 2026, while the entry-level Standard edition debuts in late 2027 at $45,000.
The Performance configuration boasts 656 horsepower, 609 lb-ft of torque, and achieves 330 miles of range from its 87.9 kWh battery pack. DC fast charging from 10% to 80% requires 29 minutes. Standard equipment includes semi-active suspension, 21-inch wheels, matrix LED lighting, plus heated and ventilated seating.
The $53,990 Premium option produces 450 horsepower while maintaining the same 330-mile range, though it eliminates several driving modes and the semi-active suspension system.
The $45,000 Standard configuration utilizes a smaller battery pack offering approximately 265 miles of range. Additional specifications remain undisclosed.
The pricing information actually surfaced prematurely. A media publication released — then rapidly retracted — an in-depth R2 review on March 11, approximately 24 hours ahead of the scheduled announcement.
Market Headwinds
The R2 enters a challenging marketplace. The Trump administration terminated the $7,500 EV purchase incentive last September, triggering a 36% year-over-year decline in U.S. electric vehicle sales during Q4.
Rivian’s existing R1 lineup carries starting prices exceeding $70,000, positioning the R2 to attract a significantly broader customer base. However, the launch timing proves challenging as affordability concerns mount throughout the EV sector.
Rivian projects deliveries between 62,000 and 67,000 vehicles in 2026, with the R2 contributing 20,000 to 25,000 units as the Normal, Illinois facility scales production. Validation vehicles have been operating at the plant since January, with commercial production scheduled to commence within weeks.
Rivian has recorded over $24 billion in cumulative losses. Company executives have identified the R2 as critical to achieving positive cash flow.
Analyst Reaction
TD Cowen’s Itay Michaeli elevated Rivian to Buy from Hold on March 10, increasing his price objective to $20 from $17. He projects annual R2 demand could ultimately exceed 200,000 units, with potential growth toward 330,000 — substantially above Wall Street’s 2027 consensus of approximately 136,000 vehicles.
Barclays analyst Dan Levy noted that tariff expenses and lost regulatory credits have intensified pressure since the R2 was initially previewed at $45,000 in March 2024.
Approximately 40% of analysts monitoring RIVN assign it a Buy rating, trailing the S&P 500 average of 59%, although Rivian has secured three Buy upgrades during the past three months. The consensus price target stands near $18.
The R2 accumulated over 68,000 reservations within 24 hours following its March 2024 concept debut, with that total exceeding 100,000 by July 2024. Rivian hasn’t provided updated reservation figures since then.
Heading into Thursday’s session, RIVN had declined approximately 16% in 2026.
