Vodafone has entered into a strategic partnership with Amazon Leo, Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation, to deliver backhaul connectivity for cellular towers located in remote regions throughout Europe and Africa.
The partnership was publicly revealed on Monday, March 2, 2026.
Amazon Leo’s satellite infrastructure will supply the critical backhaul links connecting Vodafone’s distant cell sites to its main telecommunications network.
The technology delivers impressive performance with download capabilities reaching 1 Gbps and upload speeds hitting 400 Mbps.
This approach bypasses the requirement for installing traditional fibre optic cables or fixed wireless infrastructure in locations where such deployments would be prohibitively expensive or impractical.
According to Vodafone, this collaboration significantly reduces both the cost and complexity of extending mobile service to previously unconnected regions.
Initial Launch Across Europe in 2026
The deployment strategy begins with Amazon Leo connections going live at cell sites throughout Germany, with subsequent expansion to additional European nations throughout 2026.
Both organizations anticipate the initial remote tower connections will be operational within the current year.
Following the European phase, the service will extend into African markets via Vodacom, which serves as Vodafone’s operational arm on the continent.

No specific timeline has been announced by Vodafone regarding the AST SpaceMobile service launch.
