Shares of Amprius Technologies (NYSE: AMPX) rallied approximately 10% in Monday’s premarket hours. The surge followed the announcement of a grant worth up to $75 million from the U.S. Department of War.
Amprius Technologies, Inc., AMPX
Shares changed hands around $10.70 after the announcement. This represents meaningful appreciation for the battery manufacturer that has been expanding its defense sector presence.
The funding originates from the DoW’s Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment program. This initiative supports onshore manufacturing capabilities deemed critical for national security interests.
The grant will enable Amprius to transform an existing domestic electric vehicle battery production line. A prominent South Korean manufacturer currently operates this facility.
Production Facility Details
The reconfigured plant will produce high-energy density battery cells designed for unmanned aerial systems. Production will serve Group 1, 2 and 3 drones, encompassing small through medium-sized unmanned aircraft platforms.
The facility aims for operational readiness by early 2028. At full capacity, annual production will reach approximately 12 million Amprius cells.
Total investment for the transformation project amounts to roughly $100 million. Amprius and its South Korean manufacturing partner will provide in-kind contributions to bridge the funding difference beyond the grant allocation.
The cells will satisfy National Defense Authorization Act sourcing requirements. NDAA compliance creates access to defense procurement opportunities unavailable to foreign-manufactured batteries.
Amprius CEO Tom Stepien described the grant as establishing “a primary source of domestic, NDAA-compliant battery production.” He highlighted the combination of Amprius technology with South Korean manufacturing expertise as a competitive advantage.
Company Technology and Operations
Amprius specializes in silicon anode lithium-ion batteries engineered for superior energy density. The core value proposition centers on delivering greater power capacity with reduced weight.
This technology profile aligns with aviation applications, electric vehicles and light electric vehicles. The customer base includes drone operators and high-altitude pseudo-satellite platforms, where weight optimization is critical.
The company’s silicon anodes serve as drop-in replacements for conventional graphite anodes found in standard lithium-ion batteries. Manufacturing processes integrate with established battery supply chains, minimizing infrastructure requirements.
This recent grant expands a manufacturing network already present across China, South Korea and the United States. The domestic production capability received substantial enhancement.
Financially, Amprius reported a second-quarter adjusted loss of 2 cents per share in August. Results aligned with analyst projections.
Quarterly revenue reached $34.03 million, exceeding the $29.30 million consensus estimate. For fiscal 2026, company guidance projects revenue exceeding $140 million compared to the Street estimate of $132.10 million.
Management anticipates a GAAP loss of 8 cents per share for the full year, slightly above the 7-cent loss analysts forecasted. Analyst sentiment remains constructive on the overall outlook.
Amprius holds a Buy consensus rating among analysts with a mean price objective of $31.50. Jones Trading launched coverage in July with a Buy rating and $30 price target.
Clear Street initiated coverage in June, also assigning a Buy rating with a $33 target. Needham has maintained its Buy rating and $20 price target since March.
The grant operates under an Other Transaction Agreement designated as Project acCELLerate. This fixed-price, milestone-driven agreement includes approximately $22 million already committed from FY2025 appropriations, spanning September 2026 through September 2028.
