Shares of Amylyx Pharmaceuticals experienced a dramatic surge exceeding 45% on Tuesday following the release of compelling late-stage clinical data for avexitide, which demonstrated significant reductions in dangerous hypoglycemic episodes. The stock reached $31.72 during morning session trading.

The pivotal study enrolled 78 participants who had previously received Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Results showed avexitide achieved a 55% reduction in low blood sugar events versus placebo during the 16-week treatment period, successfully achieving the study’s primary endpoint.
Post-bariatric hypoglycemia currently has no FDA-approved therapeutic options available. This condition can trigger serious complications including impaired cognition, loss of consciousness, and seizure activity.
James Condulis, an analyst with Stifel, characterized the magnitude of reduction as a “best-case scenario,” noting the results exceeded market expectations.
“Patients want more than anything to reduce the number of hypoglycemia events so that they can live independently without the fear,” said Dr. Marilyn Tan, the study’s lead investigator.
The mechanism of avexitide involves blocking specific GLP-1 receptors located in pancreatic tissue, which helps decrease excessive insulin release and maintain stable glucose levels. The safety profile showed predominantly mild to moderate adverse events, with diarrhea and bruising being most common.
Transformation Following Previous Setback
This positive outcome represents a significant turnaround for Amylyx. The biotech firm was compelled to withdraw Relyvrio, its ALS treatment, from commercial distribution in 2024 following disappointing late-stage trial outcomes, triggering workforce reductions and organizational restructuring.
Armed with $250 million in cash reserves, Amylyx indicated plans to submit a U.S. regulatory filing by the end of this year, with commercial availability targeted for 2027.
Analysts at TD Cowen estimate avexitide could achieve peak annual U.S. revenues of $2.2 billion. Geoffrey Meacham from Citi noted that investor focus will now turn to “filing acceptance, label breadth, and launch execution in an underrecognized market.”
The company obtained avexitide through a $35.1 million acquisition from Eiger BioPharmaceuticals during bankruptcy proceedings in 2024. Current management strategies for this condition include modified diet protocols, continuous glucose monitoring, and medications that block carbohydrate absorption.
Company Launches $350 Million Capital Raise
On the same Tuesday, Amylyx revealed plans for a $350 million underwritten public equity offering. The agreement includes a 30-day option allowing underwriters to acquire an additional $52.5 million in shares.
Capital raised will support pre-commercialization efforts for avexitide, encompassing expanded manufacturing infrastructure, continued research initiatives, and general operational needs.
The syndicate of underwriters includes Leerink Partners, Morgan Stanley, Guggenheim Securities, and LifeSci Capital as joint bookrunning managers.
Completion of the offering depends on prevailing market conditions, with the company noting no guarantees regarding final timing or execution.
The company’s current pipeline encompasses four experimental treatments targeting endocrine disorders and neurodegenerative conditions.
