Shares of Biogen (BIIB) surged to a 52-week pinnacle of $219.94 this Tuesday, marking a remarkable 57% appreciation over the twelve-month period. The biotechnology company’s shares commenced trading at $212.55 on Wednesday, substantially above its 52-week floor of $131.52.
The impressive rally follows robust second-quarter financial results and a significant investment from asset management giant BlackRock.
During the second quarter, BlackRock accumulated 15.98 million shares of Biogen, representing an investment of approximately $3.45 billion. This substantial position grants the investment firm an ownership stake of roughly 10.82% in the biotechnology company.
Additional institutional investors have similarly expanded their holdings. Empowered Funds increased its position by 64.9%, Focus Partners Wealth grew its stake by 172.2%, and Cerity Partners expanded holdings by 15.3%. Institutional investors and hedge funds collectively control 87.93% of the company’s outstanding shares.
The company delivered second-quarter revenue of $2.74 billion, exceeding analyst projections of $2.46 billion. Earnings per share registered at $3.60, significantly outpacing the Street consensus of $2.94.
Company Upgrades Annual Projections
Building on these impressive quarterly results, Biogen upgraded its full-year 2026 revenue guidance, shifting from an expected mid-single-digit decline to mid-single-digit growth. This substantial reversal reflects momentum from recently launched products and expanding contributions from its rare-disease therapeutic portfolio.
Management established full-year EPS guidance in the range of $12.00 to $13.00. The analyst community currently projects $12.39 in earnings per share for the fiscal year.
The stock currently commands a price-to-earnings ratio of 37.62 with a market capitalization of $31.40 billion. Technical indicators show the 50-day moving average at $204.36 while the 200-day moving average stands at $193.76.
Street Price Targets
Wall Street analysts have largely embraced the company’s recent performance. Canaccord Genuity elevated its price objective to $248 while maintaining a Buy recommendation. Guggenheim affirmed its Buy rating with a $280 target. Oppenheimer sustained its Outperform stance with a $300 price objective. H.C. Wainwright increased its target to $251.
However, some analysts remain cautious. Barclays increased its target from $185 to $200 while retaining an Equal Weight rating. JPMorgan upgraded its target from $175 to $185 with a Neutral stance.
The analyst consensus currently reflects a “Moderate Buy” recommendation with an average price target of $227.07. Among covering analysts, 18 maintain Buy ratings, 13 hold Hold ratings, one assigns a Strong Buy, and one has issued a Sell rating.
