The stock’s upward momentum followed BitMine’s announcement that it acquired 32,447 ETH over a seven-day period, bringing its comprehensive Ethereum holdings to 5.85 million tokens. The firm calculated these assets at a valuation of $2,440 per ETH.
BitMine’s accumulated 5.85 million ETH represents 4.8% of Ethereum’s worldwide circulating supply. The organization has publicly set a benchmark of reaching 5% ownership.
This substantial position was assembled in merely 14 months. BitMine initiated its ETH acquisition strategy on June 30, 2025, and has maintained uninterrupted weekly purchases. This represents 60 consecutive weeks of systematic accumulation.
As a comparison point, MicroStrategy required six years to amass 4.19% of Bitcoin’s total supply. BitMine achieved a similar percentage of ether in significantly less time.
Executive Chairman Tom Lee disclosed during an appearance on the Bankless podcast that approximately $350 million in additional ETH would be necessary to achieve 5%, though his calculation preceded Ethereum’s recent price surge. Based on current market valuations, the actual requirement approaches $620 million.
The Moving Target of 5% Ownership
However, there’s a complication. Ethereum’s supply continues to grow. The network generated approximately 85,893 additional ETH during the last 30 days, elevating total supply to 121.98 million. Achieving genuine 5% ownership now requires holding approximately 6.1 million ETH.
BitMine currently sits about 251,000 tokens below that threshold.
Lee emphasized that liquidating holdings is not under consideration. The organization has staked the majority of its ether position, with 5.07 million tokens actively staked and producing approximately $330 million annually in staking rewards. This represents roughly 12% of the entire staked ETH across the network.
These staking returns finance dividends for BMNP, a preferred stock instrument offering 9.5% yield that BitMine issued in June at $80 per share, backed by a $100 liquidation value. Lee characterized it as an attractively priced three-year leveraged exposure to ether.
Importantly, BitMine financed its entire ETH treasury through common stock issuance rather than debt financing or convertible instruments. Lee attributed the company’s survival, while competing crypto treasury operations faltered, to this conservative capital structure.
BitMine Evolves Into Ethereum Infrastructure Provider
The organization is expanding beyond pure asset accumulation. Its validation infrastructure, MAVAN (Made in America Validator Network), became operational in March. BitMine also participated in founding three organizations that emerged from the Ethereum Foundation, partnering with SharpLink and Ethereum co-creator Joe Lubin.
Among publicly traded entities, no competitor approaches BitMine’s ETH position. SharpLink, holding the second-largest treasury, possesses 888,938 tokens, approximately one-seventh of BitMine’s holdings.
Ethereum was trading at $2,511 on August 24, reflecting a 31.8% increase across the preceding seven-day period.
BMNR shares have traded between $12.80 and $65.60 over the past 52 weeks, with Wall Street analysts setting a consensus 12-month price target of $31.87.
