TLDR
- Citi shifts Moderna rating to Sell from Hold while increasing price target from $60 to $80.
- Premarket trading Wednesday saw Moderna shares decline 5.7% to $191.96.
- The biotech’s stock had surged approximately 222% from mid-August following melanoma vaccine trial results.
- According to Citi, justifying a $200 share price demands roughly $13 billion in yearly oncology sales, about 7x their current forecast.
- Analyst consensus stands at Hold, with a mean price target of $110.44, suggesting approximately 45% potential downside.
Investment bank Citi has adopted a negative stance on Moderna. On Wednesday, analyst Geoff Meacham downgraded the biotech company to Sell from its previous Hold recommendation.
This bearish call arrives following an extraordinary rally in Moderna’s equity. Since the middle of August, shares have soared approximately 222%.
The dramatic price appreciation came after clinical trial updates regarding intismeran autogene, the cancer treatment Moderna is co-developing with pharmaceutical giant Merck. The experimental therapy achieved its primary endpoints in a Phase 3 melanoma trial.
Market participants responded enthusiastically to the announcement. However, Citi believes investor optimism has exceeded reasonable bounds.
While Meacham increased his price objective from $60 to $80, this new target still represents roughly 61% below Moderna’s most recent closing price of $203.46.
Following the downgrade announcement, Moderna shares fell 5.7% to $191.96 during Wednesday’s premarket session.
Key Factors Behind Citi’s Bearish Stance
Citi’s primary concern centers on valuation metrics. Moderna’s market capitalization has expanded to approximately $80 billion, approaching the valuation of established biotech Regeneron.
However, fundamental performance metrics tell a different story. Wall Street consensus projections anticipate Moderna generating approximately $5.8 billion in revenue alongside $1.1 billion in net income by 2030.
Regeneron’s outlook is substantially different, with expectations for $22.7 billion in revenue and $8 billion in net income during the same timeframe. According to Citi, this disparity indicates investors are embedding significant pipeline success that remains unproven.
Even assuming a 100% probability of success for intismeran across all major cancer indications, Citi estimates this would justify only about $100 per share. Reaching the $200 level would necessitate approximately $13 billion in annual oncology revenue, representing nearly a seven-fold increase over Citi’s current projections.
Meacham characterized such revenue expectations as implausible.
Awaiting Critical Trial Details
Citi acknowledges the encouraging topline outcomes from the INTerpath-001 clinical trial. The study successfully achieved both recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival endpoints.
However, detailed numerical data remains undisclosed. Critical information including hazard ratios, safety profiles, and manufacturing scalability have yet to be revealed.
Meacham indicated that a hazard ratio near 0.72 would represent clinically meaningful results. Results at 0.65 or below would constitute a significant achievement.
As reference, earlier Phase 2 trial data demonstrated a five-year hazard ratio of 0.51. This establishes elevated expectations for the forthcoming Phase 3 data.
Melanoma demonstrates particularly strong responses to immunotherapy relative to other malignancies. Meacham warned that positive melanoma results don’t necessarily translate to success in kidney, lung, or bladder cancers, which present distinct biological characteristics and competitive landscapes.
The next significant data presentation is anticipated at the European Society for Medical Oncology conference scheduled for late October.
Analyst sentiment on Moderna remains divided across Wall Street. Among 20 analysts tracking the stock, six maintain Buy ratings, the majority hold neutral positions, and a small number recommend selling.
The consensus price target among Wall Street analysts stands at $110.44. This target implies potential downside of approximately 45% from present trading levels.
