Plug Power (PLUG) stock gained ground following the release of solid second-quarter earnings that showcased increased deployments, growing hydrogen revenue, and enhanced cost management. Shares traded at $2.21, reflecting a 4.73% increase, though earlier session gains diminished during a broader market retreat. The hydrogen energy company also upgraded its 2026 revenue growth projections based on improved commercial performance.
PLUG Stock Benefits from Massive GenDrive Unit Deployment Surge
Plug Power installed 1,666 GenDrive fuel cell systems throughout the quarter, representing a 125% surge compared to 739 units in the same period last year. This expansion significantly broadened the company’s material handling footprint while creating additional opportunities for recurring service contracts and hydrogen fuel sales. The company revealed that two major clients intend to refresh over 20,000 GenDrive systems over the coming three-year period.
Service-related revenue jumped 82% year-over-year to approximately $30 million in Q2. Service margins reached 27% as enhanced unit dependability boosted technician efficiency. Management attributed these gains to improved operating leverage stemming from the expanding installed equipment base.
The material handling segment continues serving as a cornerstone of Plug Power’s commercial hydrogen strategy and recurring income framework. A larger operational fleet generates ongoing demand for equipment upgrades, maintenance contracts, and sustained hydrogen fuel consumption. Consequently, the accelerating GenDrive deployment rate establishes a more diverse revenue foundation extending beyond initial hardware transactions.
Hydrogen Revenue Growth and Electrolyzer Pipeline Drive Business Momentum
Plug Power recorded approximately $178 million in total revenue for the quarter, marking roughly 9% sequential expansion. Fuel-related revenue climbed about 15% year-over-year to nearly $39 million as hydrogen usage increased. Fuel gross margin enhanced to negative 48% from negative 91% in the comparable period one year prior.
The company simultaneously progressed multiple large-scale electrolyzer installations throughout Europe, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Plug Power obtained final investment approval for Carlton Power’s 30-megawatt Barrow Green Hydrogen facility. Additionally, the firm secured a 50-megawatt electrolyzer contract for Orica’s Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub development.
Additional projects advanced through various development and commissioning phases throughout the quarter. Plug Power made progress on the 100-megawatt GALP installation in Portugal alongside a 25-megawatt facility in Spain. The company also won a 275-megawatt engineering scope contract for Hy2gen’s Courant Project located in Québec.
Profitability Metrics Strengthen as PLUG Reduces Expenses and Cash Burn
Plug Power enhanced gross margin to approximately breakeven levels from negative 31% in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin also improved from approximately negative 13% reported in Q1 2026. Operating expenses decreased roughly 50% year-over-year to approximately $62 million.
GAAP loss per share contracted to $0.14 from $0.20 in the comparable prior-year timeframe. Adjusted loss per share improved to $0.07 from $0.18 one year earlier. Reduced expense levels combined with stronger margin performance contributed to smaller operating losses during the reporting period.
Unrestricted cash totaled approximately $162 million at quarter close, while net cash consumption declined to about $61 million. Plug Power also collected roughly $47 million from asset dispositions and escrow releases throughout July and August. Management elevated full-year revenue growth guidance to the 15% to 16% range while reaffirming its fourth-quarter positive EBITDAS objective.
