On Tuesday, Rigetti Computing announced a $100 million financial commitment from the U.S. Department of Commerce, propelling RGTI shares upward by nearly 6% during premarket activity to reach $16.06.
The agreement was granted via the CHIPS Research and Development Office as part of the broader CHIPS Act initiative. The funding will facilitate three targeted research and development programs centered on superconducting quantum technology.
The three initiatives include: integrating readout electronics into a compact miniaturized format, enhancing cryogenic infrastructure through innovative cryostat design, and advancing manufacturing processes for high-connectivity quantum chip configurations.
Chief Executive Subodh Kulkarni stated that the financial backing will accelerate Rigetti’s progress toward practical, utility-scale quantum systems. “Addressing critical scalability obstacles provides us with the chance to revolutionize this sector,” Kulkarni noted.
Under the terms of the arrangement, the U.S. Department of Commerce will acquire a minority equity position in Rigetti without gaining controlling rights.
The capital injection aims to reduce both the timeline and expenses associated with constructing large-scale quantum platforms. According to Rigetti, this advancement will enable more widespread implementation and bolster the nation’s quantum computing infrastructure.
Challenging Technical Indicators Persist
Notwithstanding the recent price increase, RGTI’s technical analysis reveals ongoing challenges. Trading at $16.03, the equity was positioned 4.6% beneath its 20-day simple moving average and 2.4% under its 50-day simple moving average.
Additionally, the stock traded 12.4% below its 100-day simple moving average and 16.9% under its 200-day simple moving average. The MACD indicator continues to trend below its signal line, suggesting subdued momentum.
Market participants are monitoring $16.50 as immediate resistance and $15.50 as a key support threshold.
Wall Street Maintains Optimistic Outlook
Investment analysts continue to express confidence in RGTI’s prospects. Six analysts have established a consensus price objective of $32.60, representing approximately 100% upside from current levels.
Rosenblatt has reaffirmed its Buy recommendation alongside a $40 price target on two occasions this year, with the latest confirmation coming on August 7. Similarly, Wedbush reiterated an Outperform rating with a $40 target on August 3.
RGTI maintains significant representation in multiple quantum computing exchange-traded funds, including a 7.52% allocation in the Corgi Quantum Computing 2x Daily ETF (XQTM) and a 5.33% position in the WisdomTree Quantum Computing Fund (WQTM).
These substantial weightings indicate that capital flows into or out of these ETFs can substantially influence the stock’s price movement.
The funded programs will be carried out by Rigetti’s fully owned subsidiary, Rigetti & Co, LLC. The organization emphasizes that this work directly supports its strategic roadmap toward achieving commercially practical quantum computing solutions.
Kulkarni emphasized that lowering both expenses and construction timelines for scalable quantum platforms will provide broader accessibility for research institutions throughout the United States.
This CHIPS Act allocation represents among the most substantial federal investments in a dedicated quantum computing enterprise to date.
