Industry sources and media reports indicate the initiative carries a total value exceeding 100 trillion won, equivalent to approximately $72 billion. The distribution framework centers predominantly on special cash dividends, designating half of the corporation’s free cash flow for direct shareholder allocation.
Reuters obtained confirmation from an informed source that the board convened Friday afternoon to deliberate on the return proposal, though detailed specifics were withheld. When contacted, a Samsung representative declined to provide official commentary.
Mounting Investor Expectations
Both Samsung and SK Hynix have faced escalating demands from investors to redistribute exceptional profits generated during the artificial intelligence-fueled semiconductor surge that has propelled both companies’ financial performance to unprecedented heights.
During the second quarter of 2026, Samsung disclosed a staggering semiconductor profit increase of more than 250 times, reaching 89 trillion won. The company’s shares have skyrocketed 300% throughout the previous year, despite retreating somewhat from peak levels achieved in June amid investor concerns regarding potential deceleration in AI infrastructure investment.
SK Hynix established the competitive benchmark earlier this week by unveiling a 40 trillion won stock repurchase program coupled with treasury share cancellation, while committing to channel over 50% of free cash flow toward shareholders extending through 2027. This strategic move intensified market expectations that Samsung would respond with an even more substantial proposal.
Financial analysts estimate that Samsung and SK Hynix will collectively maintain approximately $263 billion in net cash reserves by the conclusion of this year. This substantial war chest exceeds the aggregate cash holdings of the remaining six companies within the Magnificent Seven U.S. technology cohort, based on LSEG financial data.
Market Analyst Perspectives
Investment research firm KB Securities issued a Friday analysis projecting Samsung’s share valuation could accelerate toward the ₩300,000 threshold. The brokerage identified sustained memory chip supply constraints driving earnings momentum, combined with the potential for special dividend distributions surpassing 100 trillion won, as primary growth drivers.
Samsung’s stock performance contributed to broader market strength, propelling the KOSPI benchmark index upward by 0.7% during Friday’s session. SK Hynix shares similarly advanced approximately 4.4% throughout the trading day.
Samsung’s current capital allocation framework, spanning 2024 through 2026, already directs 50% of three-year cumulative free cash flow toward shareholders. The newly announced initiative, pending formal confirmation, would substantially exceed this existing commitment.
Trading concluded Friday with Samsung advancing 3.5%, while SK Hynix registered gains of 4.4%.
