On Monday, Uber Technologies revealed a collaborative agreement with Zipline to integrate autonomous aerial delivery capabilities into the Uber Eats platform nationwide. The partnership includes an undisclosed strategic investment from Uber into the drone delivery company.
Following the announcement, Uber stock experienced a 0.95% increase.
The partnership establishes an ambitious goal of facilitating one million drone-powered deliveries each day by December 2029. Initial operations are scheduled to commence before year-end.
Deployment will begin in territories where Zipline currently maintains operations, followed by expansion into numerous other urban centers. Zipline’s global footprint spans four continents, having successfully completed two million deliveries since inception.
Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted drone delivery’s potential impact on Eats’ expansion. “Truly quick commerce is proving to be an even bigger market than the original food market was,” Khosrowshahi stated. “We think this can be an enormous tailwind for the next leg of growth for Eats.”
The partnership promises delivery times between five and ten minutes through Zipline’s drone network.
Platform Approach to Aerial Delivery
This collaboration builds on Uber’s previous agreement with Flytrex, an Israeli drone delivery company, which also involved a minority equity position established last year. Uber continues expanding its drone delivery capabilities as a cornerstone of its Uber Eats growth strategy.
The methodology parallels Uber’s autonomous vehicle strategy: integrating multiple technology partners onto its platform instead of developing proprietary solutions. Through this model, Uber has allocated over $10 billion across numerous self-driving vehicle providers.
However, this multi-partner approach has encountered challenges. The once-prominent collaboration between Uber and Waymo is anticipated to conclude when existing agreements terminate in 2028.
Zipline’s Established Market Presence
Based in San Francisco, Zipline has established commercial agreements with major retailers including Walmart and over a dozen restaurant chains such as Panera, Chipotle, and Wendy’s.
The drone delivery specialist recently finalized an extended Series H financing round totaling $800 million, elevating its corporate valuation to $7.6 billion.
Zipline co-founder Keller Cliffton commented: “Together with Uber, we’re taking the next step toward building a world where getting what you need is as fast and effortless as sending a text, no matter where you are.”
Uber initially investigated drone delivery through its Elevate division, which was subsequently divested, before re-entering the sector through external partnerships.
