Shares of Upwork (UPWK) experienced a steep 21.2% decline in after-hours trading on August 10, 2026, following the release of future projections that substantially missed analyst expectations.
The company’s third-quarter 2026 revenue forecast of $176M-$184M came in markedly below the Street consensus of approximately $194M. Additionally, full-year 2026 guidance ranging from $730M-$750M disappointed investors by missing projections considerably.
Despite the weak outlook, the second-quarter performance itself showed some positive signs. Adjusted earnings per share of $0.41 surpassed analyst forecasts of $0.34, while revenue of $191.7M narrowly exceeded the $190.1M expectation.
However, the fundamental business indicators revealed concerning trends.
The platform’s active client count decreased to 763,000 from 796,000 in the comparable year-ago quarter, extending a downward trajectory spanning several quarters. Gross services volume contracted 4% on a year-over-year basis to $966.4M.
GAAP net income declined 22% to $25.4M, translating to $0.20 per diluted share, down from $0.24 reported in the second quarter of 2025.
Adding another layer of complexity, the company’s Chief Financial Officer has been absent on temporary medical leave, with the Chief Executive Officer temporarily assuming financial oversight duties.
Artificial Intelligence Disruption and Search Algorithm Shifts
Upwork management indicated that automation technologies powered by artificial intelligence are intensifying competitive pressure on its freelance marketplace platform. The company noted that this challenge is being compounded by modifications to Google Search, which have diminished the performance of its search engine optimization initiatives.
While this narrative isn’t entirely new, Upwork is indicating that the disruption is accelerating.
Prior to the earnings announcement, the stock had already declined approximately 32% during the preceding six-month period and had retreated substantially from its 52-week peak of $22.84. Shares were trading around $9.83 with a market capitalization of $1.21 billion.
Analyst Firm Reduces Valuation Target
On August 11, Needham revised its price target on UPWK downward to $11 from $15, while maintaining its Buy rating on the shares.
The investment firm reduced its 2026 adjusted EBITDA projection by 10% and its 2027 forecast by 22%.
Needham acknowledged significant uncertainty surrounding the ongoing estimate revision trajectory. The firm identified potential long-term growth opportunities in Enterprise solutions, Business Plus offerings, and MCP-enabled agent workflows as justification for preserving the Buy recommendation.
According to InvestingPro analysis, the stock appears undervalued relative to its Fair Value assessment, supported by robust gross profit margins of 77.5% and a “GREAT” financial health rating.
The broader equity markets provided no support during the session. The S&P 500 closed essentially unchanged while the Nasdaq finished marginally lower, as market participants awaited forthcoming CPI and PPI economic data scheduled for release later that week.
Despite the reduction, Needham’s updated $11 price target remains above the stock’s current trading level of $9.83.
