Airbnb (ABNB) has broadened its collaboration with Instacart (CART) to provide nationwide grocery delivery services in the United States, enabling travelers to purchase food and household items directly within the Airbnb platform prior to their arrival.
This functionality permits travelers to submit orders as much as 21 days in advance of their scheduled check-in time. Purchases totaling at least $10 receive free delivery. Users don’t need to download the Instacart application or create a separate login, and the destination address populates automatically from the booking details.
According to Airbnb, grocery delivery capabilities have consistently appeared among the most frequently requested enhancements from its community. This nationwide expansion now serves the overwhelming majority of qualifying reservations across the United States.
The service will extend to Canada shortly, with availability anticipated within the next several weeks. Instacart has established a strong presence in the Canadian market, experiencing particularly high usage during major holiday periods.
Two markets—Phoenix, Arizona, and Orlando, Florida—are testing an enhanced version of the partnership. Property owners in these cities can volunteer to accept grocery deliveries for their guests and prepare the refrigerator and storage areas before arrival.
“Our goal was to integrate groceries seamlessly into the travel experience rather than treating it as an additional task,” explained Juan David Borrero, who leads partnerships and business development globally at Airbnb.
Ryan Hamburger, serving as Chief Commercial Officer at Instacart, noted the collaboration “creates additional demand for our retail partners while simplifying the process for travelers to obtain necessary groceries at any destination.”
Regional Shopping Trends Reveal Travel Patterns
Airbnb and Instacart analyzed purchasing behaviors across different locations, revealing distinct patterns that reflect regional travel characteristics and local activities.
Coastal destinations show strong demand for sun protection products. Travelers visiting Madeira Beach, Florida purchase sunscreen at approximately 4.5 times the national baseline. In the Great Smoky Mountains region, breakfast staples like thick-cut bacon and pancake syrup dominate shopping carts. Nashville visitors purchase energy drinks at more than twice the nationwide rate.
Guests staying in Big Bear, California show a pronounced preference for campfire treats: graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars rank among the most characteristic purchases in this mountain community.
Certain regional preferences show dramatic variations: Miami travelers ordered bottled yerba mate at rates exceeding 3,000% above the national baseline. Los Angeles visitors purchased oat milk at more than double the typical rate. Austin guests bought navel oranges at 272% above the standard average.
In Orlando, baby food purees appeared in orders at 188% above the national norm, suggesting significant family vacation traffic in the theme park capital.
Canadian Expansion Timeline
Instacart has become deeply integrated into Canadian consumer habits, with particularly notable activity surrounding national celebrations. During the Easter season, fresh-cut tulips see orders increase 13-fold compared to the annual Canadian average. Before Victoria Day, garden soil purchases surge fivefold. Orders for Canadian flags multiply more than 40 times in the period surrounding Canada Day.
Airbnb confirmed the Canadian service launch will occur within the coming weeks, with ongoing expansion to increase coverage throughout the country over time.
