American Eagle Outfitters is doubling down on a proven strategy. The apparel company has unveiled its second advertising collaboration with actress Sydney Sweeney, centering on summer denim shorts. Shares rallied 7% following the announcement.
American Eagle Outfitters, Inc., AEO
Dubbed “Syd for Short: American Eagle Jean Shorts,” the campaign showcases Sweeney modeling low-rise shorts and ultra-low-rise micro skorts in a coastal setting with azure skies and ocean backdrops.
Jennifer Foyle, who serves as President and Executive Creative Director for AE & Aerie, explained that the campaign blends “classic cutoffs with Sydney Sweeney’s signature ease” to position AE denim as the season’s essential shorts.
The original campaign featured the slogan “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” and faced social media criticism regarding alleged eugenics messaging. American Eagle weathered the storm and maintained course.
The gamble proved successful. The company saw a 37% revenue increase during the six months following the campaign launch, while AEO stock soared 77% throughout 2025. Leadership attributed the campaign’s visibility to driving both financial performance and share price appreciation.
A Campaign With a Cause
This marks the second consecutive Sweeney partnership incorporating specially designed denim pieces supporting Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit offering complimentary, confidential mental health assistance 24/7.
The “Syd Jean” and “Syd Short” feature a butterfly emblem recognizing domestic violence survivors, initially launched during the 2025 back-to-school period. American Eagle contributes 100% of proceeds from these items to the charitable organization.
According to Sweeney, the charitable component has been integral to the collaboration since its inception. “I love knowing that when everyone wears these pieces, they are also a part of something meaningful,” she stated.
What the Summer Collection Looks Like
The summer 2026 assortment is extensive. American Eagle’s shorts selection encompasses over 200 styles and washes across women’s and men’s categories. The season brings more than 850 fresh styles, emphasizing relaxed, versatile garments.
Shoppers can browse “Syd’s Shop,” a specially curated selection of Sweeney’s favorites including the Low-Rise Shortie and the Super Low-Rise Micro Skort.
The collection emphasizes casual summer aesthetics — comfortable denim, adaptable tops, and pieces suitable for daily wear.
Tariffs continue presenting challenges for the retailer. The majority of its merchandise is manufactured internationally, especially throughout Asia, and these expenses continue impacting profit margins.
From an analyst perspective, AEO carries a consensus Hold rating among nine Wall Street analysts. This comprises one Buy recommendation, six Hold ratings, and two Sell ratings issued within the past three months.
The consensus price target stands at $24.14, suggesting approximately 27% potential upside from the stock’s pre-announcement trading level.
