TLDR
- Broadcom stock has fallen approximately 28% from its yearly peak despite continued growth in AI semiconductor revenue.
- Broadcom reported $16.7 billion in fiscal third-quarter AI chip revenue, representing 221% annual growth.
- CEO Hock Tan warned that financing constraints could slow AI infrastructure expansion despite strong demand.
- Broadcom’s partnerships with OpenAI, Google, Apple, Apollo, and Blackstone support its long-term expansion plans.
- Broadcom’s elevated valuation and rising AI infrastructure costs remain central concerns for investors.
Broadcom (AVGO) stock remained under pressure on October 13 after closing Monday at $354.73, down 1.88%. Shares have fallen about 28% from their $495 yearly peak. The retreat contrasts with continued growth in artificial intelligence chip sales amid rising questions about expensive infrastructure projects.
Broadcom Stock Retreats as AI Funding Faces Questions
Chief Executive Hock Tan raised concerns about investor expectations at a Singapore conference this week. He said financing could limit data center expansion even as chip demand remains strong. Semiconductor stocks declined following the discussion.
Other chipmakers faced similar selling. Nvidia shares also retreated amid questions about OpenAI’s revenue figures and Microsoft’s new AI processor. Broadcom itself fell 4.35% on October 8, before another decline on Monday.
Fresh funding reports added to those questions. The Wall Street Journal reported that Broadcom was seeking more than $50 billion to finance custom chips developed with OpenAI. The report described potential financing, not a completed transaction.
AI Partnerships Support Broadcom Revenue Growth
Broadcom reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $29.6 billion in September, an 86% annual increase. AI semiconductor revenue reached $16.7 billion, up 221% from a year earlier. The company reported $13.7 billion in quarterly free cash flow.
The wider chip industry continues to face pressure. Intel stock also weakened as investors weighed financing concerns and losses at its manufacturing unit. Broadcom, meanwhile, introduced additional AI networking products for the October Open Compute Project summit.
Its OpenAI agreement covers 10 gigawatts of custom accelerator deployments through 2029. Broadcom also works with Google on custom chips. Separately, an Apollo- and Blackstone-backed platform targets more than 20 gigawatts of AI computing capacity through 2028.
Valuation and Forecasts Remain in Focus
Broadcom’s share price has declined despite these agreements. The company extended its Apple chip relationship through 2031, including a reported $30 billion purchasing commitment. Investors continue weighing the expected sales against the capital required to support future projects.
Recent research on AI stock concentration also showed how heavily major indexes rely on technology companies. Broadcom trades at about 31 times expected earnings, compared with a cited sector median near 23. Such estimates can change with prices and profit forecasts.
Broadcom expects fourth-quarter revenue near $34.8 billion, with AI semiconductor sales reaching $21.7 billion. Those figures represent company guidance rather than reported results.
