Beginning September 4, 2026, Google will initiate a phased transition from Google Assistant to Gemini across Android smartphones, tablets, Wear OS-powered wearables, audio devices, and Android Auto-enabled vehicles. The complete deployment will span several weeks.

Following the migration on any particular device, reverting to Google Assistant will no longer be an option.

The Rationale Behind Google’s Transition

Google initially revealed its intention to migrate users from Google Assistant to Gemini in March 2025. Brian Marquardt, who serves as Senior Director of Product Management, indicated that millions had already voluntarily adopted Gemini.

Gemini’s capabilities extend beyond simple voice-activated commands. The platform can create content, process sequential queries, provide summarizations, and integrate seamlessly throughout Google’s ecosystem of applications.

Google Assistant debuted in 2016 with functionality focused on straightforward tasks including reminder creation, weather inquiries, and smart home device management. Gemini, which launched in 2023, supports extended, sophisticated dialogues.

During the second quarter of 2026, the Gemini application reached 950 million monthly active users. Daily engagement metrics showed a threefold increase compared to the same period one year earlier.

Google continues advancing its Gemini model portfolio. Recent developments include the launch of Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber, ongoing testing of Gemini 3.5 Pro, and initial pre-training phases for Gemini 4.

Gmail Feature Removals Scheduled for Early 2027

In a separate announcement, Google disclosed plans to terminate two Gmail features. The “Send as” functionality, which enables users to transmit messages from third-party email accounts such as Yahoo, Outlook, and Hotmail through the Gmail interface, will cease operation in January 2027.

Additionally, Gmailify—a service providing Gmail capabilities like spam protection and inbox management tools to external email accounts—will be discontinued simultaneously.
