Moonshot AI has announced the public availability of its Kimi K3 model weights, enabling developers worldwide to download, customize, and deploy the AI system without cost.
The Chinese artificial intelligence company will provide access to the model’s underlying weights beginning Monday. This release empowers software developers to obtain, adapt, and independently operate the AI platform on their own infrastructure.
Featuring 2.8 trillion parameters, Kimi K3 claims the distinction of being the planet’s most expansive open-weight artificial intelligence model. These parameters serve as indicators of how sophisticated and capable an AI system is.
With a context window spanning 1 million tokens, the model can analyze extensive documents or complete software repositories within one query.
According to Moonshot, K3 demonstrates competitive performance against OpenAI’s Fable 5 and surpasses both Anthropic’s Opus offering and multiple GPT-5 versions when evaluated across various industry-standard tests.
China’s Rising AI Competitiveness
The debut of K3 has drawn parallels to DeepSeek’s emergence in early 2025. Both instances demonstrate how Chinese technology firms can develop competitive AI systems using reduced resources and lower budgets compared to American competitors.
AI models from China have gained international traction by providing cost-effective alternatives while maintaining similar capabilities. Leading cloud infrastructure providers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Vertex AI have yet to integrate these Chinese open-weight models into their platforms.
Analysts from Bloomberg Intelligence observed that while adoption of open-weight models continues to grow, monetization success will largely hinge on securing distribution partnerships with major cloud service providers.
Investment Rounds, Public Offering Plans, and American Oversight
Following K3’s debut, Moonshot experienced at least a sixfold surge in daily revenue. The overwhelming demand forced the company to temporarily halt new subscription sign-ups.
In May, Moonshot achieved a $20 billion company valuation after securing $2 billion in investment led by Meituan’s Long-Z Investments venture capital division. The startup is currently pursuing additional funding that would place its worth at $50 billion, despite being only three years old.
Plans for an initial public offering in Hong Kong could materialize before year’s end. Company founder Yang Zhilin has emphasized Moonshot’s commitment to expansion through transparency and open systems rather than closed, proprietary technologies.
The firm has drawn scrutiny from United States officials. Last week, a White House representative claimed Moonshot developed K3 using restricted Nvidia processors and employed distillation techniques — a method involving extraction of outputs from competing models to enhance its own performance.
Moonshot has remained silent regarding these accusations.
A comprehensive technical document detailing K3’s design, training methodology, and performance metrics is anticipated to accompany the model’s public release.
