Key Highlights
- Real-world OCTANE research tracked 194 individuals who transitioned from injectable obesity medications to Novo Nordisk’s oral Wegovy formulation.
- Participants achieved an average body weight reduction of 4.1% within a three-month period after switching to the pill version.
- Clinical obesity classification decreased from 87.1% to 65.5% among study participants during the evaluation period.
- Shares of Novo Nordisk have declined over 70% from peak levels as Eli Lilly emerged as the dominant force in weight management pharmaceuticals.
- Pills for obesity treatment currently represent approximately one-third of weight-loss prescriptions in the United States, with Novo commanding more than 80% market share.
Shares of Novo Nordisk (NVO) have plummeted more than 70% from record highs. Fresh research unveiled Wednesday may provide the pharmaceutical giant with a much-needed boost.
The Copenhagen-based pharmaceutical company shared findings from its OCTANE research at a diabetes medical conference held in Milan. The investigation examined individuals who transitioned from injection-based weight management treatments to the once-daily oral Wegovy tablet.
Study subjects experienced a mean body weight decrease of 4.1% across a three-month timeframe following their medication switch. This translates to approximately 4 kilograms, equivalent to 8.8 pounds, based on an initial average weight of 221.6 pounds.
Close to 41% of study subjects achieved weight reduction of at least 5% within the three-month observation window. The percentage of participants meeting clinical criteria for obesity decreased from 87.1% to 65.5% during this same interval.
The investigation encompassed 194 individuals utilizing information collected through telehealth provider Ro. The majority of subjects had previously used either Wegovy injections or Eli Lilly’s Zepbound prior to transitioning to the tablet formulation.
The Strategic Importance of Oral Formulation
Novo established its initial leadership position in obesity pharmaceuticals through injectable Wegovy following its 2021 market entry. That competitive advantage proved temporary. Eli Lilly has subsequently displaced Novo as the market’s leading competitor.
The tablet version represents one of Novo’s limited areas of momentum. Oral weight management medications currently comprise roughly one-third of obesity prescriptions in the United States, with Novo securing over 80% of newly written oral prescriptions.
Chief Executive Officer Mike Doustdar informed Reuters in a recent interview that tablet formulations may ultimately constitute half of the worldwide obesity medication market. Industry analysts estimate this market could reach $100 billion or higher in annual value before 2030.
Novo’s Chief Scientific Officer Martin Holst Lange responded to widespread questions regarding the pill format explicitly. He indicated that patient adherence challenges have not materialized as some industry observers anticipated.
“Obviously, many patients actually perform better with the pill compared to the injectable formulations,” Lange stated in a media interview.
Understanding Study Limitations and Strengths
Real-world investigations such as OCTANE operate differently from randomized controlled trials. They depend partially on patient-reported information and cannot establish definitive causation in the manner that controlled experiments can.
Nevertheless, the findings provide Novo with valuable messaging during a challenging period for the company’s stock performance. Approximately 82% of study participants with accessible data documented at least one therapeutic improvement, encompassing improved clothing fit and enhanced dietary patterns.
Dr. Louis Aronne from Weill Cornell Medicine, serving as a study co-investigator, indicated the findings demonstrate a viable treatment alternative for specific patient populations. He emphasized the pill format enabled numerous participants to fall below obesity diagnostic thresholds.
The oral Wegovy formulation carries a boxed warning regarding potential thyroid tumor development, including malignancy. It is contraindicated for individuals with personal or familial history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 syndrome.
Frequently reported adverse effects encompass nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort, along with additional reactions.
Oral Wegovy is presently marketed in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and United Arab Emirates. Novo indicated plans to introduce the tablet formulation in supplementary markets throughout upcoming quarters.
