Shares of Oklo (OKLO) climbed during pre-market hours following confirmation that the company received critical federal safety authorization for its Groves reactor facility in Texas. The stock advanced to $54.90, representing a 4.92% increase from the previous close of $52.33, which had declined 0.82%. The positive momentum came as the isotope test facility cleared a significant regulatory hurdle on its path toward operations.
Federal Safety Authorization Advances Project Timeline
Oklo announced that the Department of Energy has granted approval for the Documented Safety Analysis related to its Groves Isotope Test Reactor. This authorization was issued through the DOE’s Reactor Pilot Program, an initiative designed to accelerate development of next-generation nuclear facilities. The clearance represents completion of a critical safety documentation phase.
The Documented Safety Analysis establishes the comprehensive safety framework for the installation. This evaluation encompasses hazard assessments, protective measures, and operational protocols required prior to commencing operations. The approval builds upon an earlier preliminary safety analysis that guided design and construction activities.
Having obtained both regulatory clearances, the Groves facility now transitions to DOE’s final pre-operational evaluation process. Outstanding requirements include a comprehensive readiness assessment and formal startup authorization from federal officials. Once these conditions are satisfied, the company can proceed with fuel delivery, loading operations, and initial testing protocols.
Groves Facility Progresses Toward Mid-2026 Milestone
The company has established a July 2026 target for achieving initial criticality at the Groves location. Reaching criticality represents the stage at which a nuclear reactor sustains a controlled, continuous fission reaction. Upcoming regulatory assessments will shape the timeline for reaching this operational benchmark.
Construction commenced at the Texas site under twelve months ago. The facility represents what Oklo’s leadership describes as a commercial-scale demonstration plant developed outside traditional government laboratory settings. The initiative utilizes privately held property, commercial fuel channels, and independent operational systems while remaining under federal regulatory supervision.
Beyond testing reactor technology, Groves serves a strategic role in the company’s isotope production strategy. The installation is designed to generate specialized isotopes essential for oncology treatments, industrial applications, scientific research, aerospace missions, and national security purposes. Current supplies of many such materials depend heavily on international sources or aging production infrastructure.
Company Pursues Domestic Isotope Production Capacity
Management views Groves as a proving ground for production methodologies ahead of expanded commercial operations. The demonstration facility will enable evaluation of reactor capabilities and operational frameworks. These insights could strengthen domestic isotope manufacturing infrastructure and reduce foreign dependency.
The firm specializes in fast fission reactor technology, spent fuel reprocessing solutions, and isotope generation platforms. Earlier this year, the company obtained a site permit from DOE for a commercial advanced nuclear installation. Idaho National Laboratory has previously supplied fuel materials supporting the company’s research and development activities.
