Key Points
- Planet Labs (PL) stock jumped 3.18% to $18.17 in Friday’s premarket session, extending Thursday’s 7.57% rally.
- Google announced its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite will launch next week on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission.
- The partnership with Planet was first announced in November 2025; this week’s announcement marks a launch milestone rather than a fresh collaboration.
- Pre-flight testing confirmed Google’s Trillium TPUs can withstand radiation exposure exceeding five years of space operation.
- Google has scheduled a dual-satellite laser communication test for 2027 to validate space-based AI computing infrastructure.
Planet Labs (PL) shares advanced 3.18% to reach $18.17 during Friday’s premarket hours. This continues momentum from Thursday’s session, which saw the stock close 7.57% higher at $17.62.
The upward movement follows Google’s Wednesday announcement regarding Project Suncatcher, an initiative designed to evaluate artificial intelligence processors in space conditions. The tech giant confirmed the inaugural orbital mission will commence next week.
Based on Friday’s premarket valuation, Planet was positioned roughly 10.7% above its September 18 closing price of $16.42. Should this price level persist through regular market hours, the stock appears set to record substantial weekly gains.
Importantly, this doesn’t represent a fresh partnership announcement. Planet publicly disclosed its Suncatcher participation in November 2025. The current development marks Google’s transition from laboratory validation to actual spaceflight operations.
Google’s Space-Based AI Chip Experiment
The Suncatcher spacecraft is scheduled to launch on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 shared payload mission. Developed in collaboration with Planet, the satellite will transport Google Tensor Processing Units beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
The primary objective involves assessing chip performance throughout launch conditions and orbital operations. The space environment presents unique challenges including intense radiation exposure and dramatic thermal variations absent in terrestrial settings.
Google conducted extensive pre-launch validation procedures. Technical teams subjected the satellite to vibration protocols simulating rocket launch forces, while separately exposing Trillium TPUs to proton beam radiation at UC Davis facilities.
Results from radiation exposure tests indicated the processors could endure radiation levels surpassing those encountered during five years of space deployment. Engineers also validated a specialized heat pipe and radiator cooling mechanism, necessary since the vacuum of space prevents conventional convective heat dissipation.
A more comprehensive evaluation is scheduled for 2027, when Google intends to deploy two satellites simultaneously. This advanced phase will examine whether inter-satellite laser communication can enable functional distributed computing infrastructure in orbit.
Planet’s Involvement Dates to Late 2025
Planet initially disclosed its Suncatcher participation on November 4, 2025. The original announcement indicated the company would deploy two prototype spacecraft by early 2027 to evaluate high-throughput communication links between platforms.
Planet additionally confirmed the project leverages the identical satellite-bus architecture used in its Owl technology series, connecting the mission to existing manufacturing capabilities.
Therefore, Google’s recent communication establishes a near-term launch event preceding the 2027 demonstration phase. It doesn’t represent a newly forged agreement between the organizations.
Separate from Suncatcher, Planet has experienced significant activity recently. The company introduced Amazon.ia this week, a satellite monitoring program supported by over $14 million from the Bezos Earth Fund focused on Amazon rainforest biodiversity tracking.
Planet’s Berlin manufacturing center is projected to approximately double satellite production throughput, a development industry observers believe could help monetize the company’s estimated $815 million contract backlog.
Regarding financial performance, Planet reported $0.02 earnings per share in the most recent quarter, exceeding analyst projections, while revenue climbed 58.2% compared to the year-ago period. Current Wall Street consensus maintains a Hold rating on PL stock, with an average analyst price target of $32.77.
Planet’s tokenized equity product, PLon, was quoted at $18.28 as of 7:08 a.m. ET Friday, representing a 12.74% increase over the preceding 24-hour period according to CoinMarketCap data.
