Shares of Qualcomm experienced a significant rally of up to 9.5% during Tuesday’s trading session following the announcement of a comprehensive chip development partnership with Amazon, delivering much-needed positive momentum for the semiconductor company.
The stock launched Tuesday’s session approximately 5.6% higher at the opening bell before momentum carried shares even higher. Prior to this announcement, QCOM had been underperforming relative to the wider semiconductor industry.
The partnership focuses on creating purpose-built AI processors tailored for Amazon’s expansive data center operations. These specialized chips will primarily handle inference tasks, where trained AI models process inputs and deliver results.
Amazon Web Services will collaborate closely with Qualcomm to engineer power-efficient processors optimized for large-scale AI workloads. Amazon contributes its infrastructure scale while Qualcomm leverages its extensive expertise in energy-efficient chip architecture.
The collaboration extends beyond processing power to encompass high-performance optical connectivity technologies. The companies are jointly engineering a next-generation 1.6T solution designed to transmit data at speeds reaching 1.6 terabits per second.
Qualcomm’s sophisticated SerDes and optical DSP platforms form the foundation of this connectivity initiative, designed to address the escalating bandwidth requirements of contemporary AI-driven data centers.
Understanding the Warrant Agreement
Under the terms of the arrangement, Qualcomm granted Amazon a warrant providing the right to acquire up to 25 million QCOM shares at an exercise price of $161.26 per share. This warrant remains exercisable until September 2036.
According to Qualcomm’s 8-K regulatory filing, the warrant structure correlates with potential revenues of up to $60 billion. This framework indicates a substantial long-term strategic alliance rather than a conventional short-term procurement arrangement.
Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm’s Chief Executive Officer, characterized the agreement as aligned with evolving AI infrastructure requirements. “As AI demand accelerates, data center infrastructure will require advances in both computing and connectivity to deliver greater performance with more efficiency,” he stated.
Prasad Kalyanaraman, AWS Vice President, emphasized that the partnership “builds on a strong foundation of partnership and reflects our shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.”
QCOM’s 2026 Market Performance
Prior to Tuesday’s rally, Qualcomm had been trailing the semiconductor sector throughout 2026. The PHLX Semiconductor Index has climbed 68% during the current year, while QCOM had remained in negative territory until this week’s announcement.
Following Tuesday’s surge, the stock has returned to positive performance for the year, although it continues to lag behind numerous semiconductor industry competitors.
The expanded agreement includes Qualcomm’s commitment to expand its utilization of AWS cloud infrastructure, incorporating Amazon Bedrock, to streamline chip development processes and reduce time-to-market cycles.
Amazon’s stock experienced a modest decline on Tuesday, falling less than 1% during the session.
QCOM shares were trading approximately 3.86% higher during Tuesday afternoon on September 8, 2026.
