Super Micro Computer, Inc., SMCI
The upward momentum stemmed from growing investor confidence in AI infrastructure demand, combined with scrutiny of the company’s recent preliminary quarterly disclosure, which included several notable metrics.
Management announced that it captured over $60 billion in new AI server orders during its fiscal fourth quarter that concluded on June 30. This achievement elevated its order backlog to an all-time high as the company enters fiscal 2027.
Quarterly revenue is projected to arrive near the lower boundary of the $11 billion to $12.5 billion guidance corridor. While this aspect falls short of expectations, the profitability narrative presents a more encouraging scenario.
Management now anticipates gross margins to fall within the 15% to 17% range. This represents a substantial improvement from the previous guidance of 8.2% to 8.4%, essentially doubling the profitability outlook provided earlier this year.
Market Hesitation Despite Strong Order Book
Notwithstanding the substantial order pipeline, investor enthusiasm remains measured. Supermicro acknowledged that portions of these orders lack firm commitments, leaving them vulnerable to potential cancellations or postponements.
The organization plans to raise $7 billion through equity-related instruments to finance the component acquisitions necessary for order execution. This strategy has generated concerns about shareholder dilution among current stakeholders.
Additionally, an independent board investigation into specific transactions connected to potential export control violations remains in progress. The preliminary financial data has not yet undergone independent auditor verification.
These uncertainties contribute to the stock’s current price-to-earnings multiple of just 16.47, accompanied by a PEG ratio of 0.36, representing near-historic valuation compression.
Earnings Report Focus Points
Market attention now shifts to the August 11 financial release. Shareholders seek confirmation regarding the conversion rate of the $60 billion backlog into realized revenue, along with the sustainability of enhanced margin performance.
The previous quarterly disclosure in May featured earnings per share of $0.84, surpassing the $0.63 analyst consensus. Revenue reached $10.24 billion, falling short of the $12.39 billion projection, while still delivering 122.7% annual growth.
Wall Street analysts remain divided. Four recommend Buy ratings, 12 assign Hold ratings, and two maintain Sell positions. The mean price objective stands at $39.21.
Rosenblatt Securities maintains a $45 price target alongside a Buy recommendation. Goldman Sachs continues with a Sell rating. Wedbush lowered its target from $42 to $34 while maintaining a Neutral stance.
Institutional investors control 84.06% of outstanding shares, with multiple funds expanding their positions during Q2, notably Baird Financial Group, which boosted its holdings by 54.9%.
The 50-day moving average sits at $31.56, while the 200-day moving average rests at $30.46, positioning the current trading price near both technical benchmarks.
