Urbanization is accelerating at a rapid pace, and cities around the world are facing increasing challenges related to congestion, pollution, and sustainability. The 20-minute city concept has emerged as a groundbreaking solution, offering the potential to revolutionize urban living and create more sustainable, livable, and connected communities. In this article, we will explore the 20-minute city model, its benefits, and how it ties into Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan.
What is a 20 Minute City?
The 20 minute city will have all essential services a person requires. They will be easily accessible and within a 20 minute walk or bike ride from any location in the city. Reduced commute times and a focus on local services promote a more balanced work-life dynamic, allowing residents to spend less time traveling and more time engaging with their communities and family. Emphasis on green spaces and walkability encourages healthier, more active lifestyles, while the reduction of car dependency leads to lower carbon emissions and improved air quality.
Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, unveiled the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, outlining a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable urban growth in the city. In alignment with the UAE’s 50-year vision, the plan concentrates on improving happiness and quality of life for the residents of Dubai. This people-oriented plan aims to bolster Dubai’s standing as a global destination. The plan’s objective is to realize His Highness’s vision of making Dubai the city with the best quality of life, providing top-notch urban infrastructure and amenities. Dubai is set to become home to a 93-kilometer climate-controlled highway called ‘THE LOOP,’ aimed at connecting over 3 million residents through a healthy and sustainable mode of transport. Designed to make walking and cycling the primary modes of transport. By 2040, it aims to have over 80% of Dubai’s residents use walking and cycling for their daily commutes. Currently, in its research and development phase, THE LOOP will feature renewable energy, zero-emission transport, recycled water for irrigation, and additional amenities for residents, promoting health, well-being, and food security through vertical farms. Ambitious plans for an already thriving city.
