TLDR
- XRP Ledger has processed more than 10 million x402 payments.
- The network now averages about 500,000 x402 payments daily.
- AI agents remain a major driver of automated payment activity.
- x402 supports payments using XRP and RLUSD for digital services.
- Ripple joined the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member to support protocol development.
The XRP Ledger has passed 10 million x402 payments, less than three months after reaching its first million. RippleX head J. Ayo Akinyele said the network averages 500,000 x402 payments daily. He linked the rise to AI agents paying for online services.
XRP Ledger Records Rapid x402 Payment Growth
The x402 protocol lets software send payments through HTTP requests. Coinbase launched the protocol in May 2026 using the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” code. Agents can pay for APIs, data, and digital services without accounts or manual approval.
XRPL joined x402 through an implementation from t54. It supports XRP and RLUSD, while settlement usually finishes within seconds. The growth follows x402 adoption for AI agent payments, with networks connecting to the protocol.
AI Agents Drive Automated Payment Activity
Akinyele said AI agents remain the source of most x402 activity on XRPL. These agents can locate services, pay for access, and continue tasks without waiting for manual approval.
The network crossed one million x402 payments within weeks of adding support in June. Activity rose after developers gained the XRPL AI Hub and AI Starter Kit. The kit lets agents send and receive XRP and RLUSD.
Low Fees Support Machine-to-Machine Payments
XRPL charges a transaction fee near $0.0002, supporting frequent low-value payments. Payments settle within three to five seconds, giving automated systems a result before another task. Recent RLUSD growth across the XRP Ledger shows another payment asset gaining use on the network.
t54 said APIs and data services account for much of x402 activity. New services are appearing in financial data, credit, and risk tools. These uses give agents more options for buying digital resources directly.
Ripple Joins Wider x402 Standards Effort
Ripple joined the Linux Foundation-backed x402 Foundation as a Premier Member. The group launched in July 2026 with 40 members from payments, cloud services, finance, and technology. Ripple can take part in technical and governance discussions around the protocol.
XRPL development continues beyond agent payments. Recent XRP Ledger upgrade activity includes work on features for linked transactions and other payment functions. For x402, the milestone shows automated payments now account for more network activity.
Akinyele previously said he expected XRPL to pass 10 million x402 payments quickly. He also said the network could reach 100 million over several years if AI agent use and supporting infrastructure continue to grow.
